🍵 Matcha – Green Energy with a Thousand-Year History

More than just tea! 🍵

Sometimes we need something more than just caffeine. Something that wakes us up – yet calms us. Something with a story, tradition, and the power of nature. Matcha is exactly that. 🍵💚

This week, we're taking you into the world of Japanese tea artistry and showing you how to prepare a refreshing summer drink with a few simple tools that you'll want to drink every day.

🌿 How did it all begin?

The story of matcha begins in China in the 8th century, where tea leaves were steamed, dried, and ground into powder to prepare a drink with water. However, a true revolution was sparked by the Japanese Buddhist monk Eisai, who brought this custom to Japan at the end of the 12th century. There, matcha became part of Zen Buddhist practices, as it helped maintain alertness and inner peace during long meditations.

Since then, matcha has earned special respect among the Japanese – they developed an entire tea preparation ritual, called chanoyu, which is still considered an art of balance, respect, and presence in the moment.

🍃 Why is matcha powder?

Matcha differs from most other teas in that it is very finely ground into powder. And the reason for this is quite special:

Matcha is produced from tea leaves of the tenchavariety, which grow in the shade – about 3 weeks before harvest, the tea bushes are covered with bamboo shades. This increases the content of chlorophyll and L-theanine, which gives it its characteristic green color and "umami" taste.

After harvesting, the leaves are not rolled or fermented like black tea, but are quickly steamed, dried, and then slowly ground in stone mills. It is precisely because of this gentle processing that matcha is so vibrant, fresh – and rich in antioxidants.

👉 When you prepare matcha, you're not just making a "tea drink" – you're consuming the whole leaf, which means more nutrients and a more intense effect.

🤓 FUN FACT

It takes over 1,000 hand-picked leavesfor just 30g of the highest quality ceremonial grade matcha powder. And since grinding in stone mills is very slow, one mill can only grind 40g per hour. It's a true art of patience.

🧊 And in the summer?

Matcha isn't just for winter meditations – far from it! In the summer, it transforms into a refreshing and healthy alternative to coffee or carbonated drinks:

☀️ Cold matcha latte with coconut milk – creamy, slightly sweet, and tropical

🍊 Orange matcha fizz – fresh orange juice + sparkling water + matcha = BOOM

🍋 Matcha lemonade – pure energy that wakes you up better than espresso

🍵 The right tools, the right matcha

If you want frothy and delicious matcha without lumps, then the right tools are almost essential:

  • Whisk (chasen) – a traditionally handmade bamboo whisk that creates perfect foam

  • Whisk stand – to help the whisk maintain its shape and dry faster

  • Matcha bowl (chawan) – the correct shape for comfortable mixing

  • Spoon (chashaku) – to always use the right amount (approx. 1 gram)

It's not just about tea. It's about a moment. Your moment.
