CHEMEX® was invented in 1941 by the eccentric chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. During his career, he developed more than 300 patents, from cocktail shakers to automobiles. He focused on making everyday objects more functional, attractive and pleasant to use.
When designing CHEMEXA®, Schlumbohm wanted to make brewing the perfect cup not only simple, but also visually appealing. Being a chemist, he studied and clearly understood the chemistry behind extracting flavor and caffeine from coffee beans.
It was this knowledge that led him to invent CHEMEX Bonded™ paper filters with a double bond for perfect extraction every time. When designing the carafe, Schlumbohm started from the Bauhaus design school and non-porous laboratory containers that do not impart their own taste. He used these elements to create the hourglass shape that has now become an iconic part of American history.
Crafted from a single piece of borosilicate glass and adorned with a wooden collar and rawhide tie, the CHEMEX® is pure in both form and function. He was recognized and awarded both by the scientific community as well as the artistic and design community.
The CHEMEXA® model is on display in museums around the world and is included in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass, and New York's MOMA.
The Museum of Modern Art exhibited it as one of the best designed products in 1943, and CHEMEX® is ranked among the 100 best designed products of modern times by the Illinois Institute of Technology.

SOMETHING MORE ABOUT CHEMEX® ITSELF
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. However, imitation really cannot replace the original CHEMEX coffee brewing system.
Few products can match the seamless combination of design and function of the CHEMEX® system. Due to its visual elegance, it is included in the permanent collections of many of the most prestigious museums around the world. Its functionality has been rewarded by the scientific and coffee community.
CHEMEXI® are made of the same quality glass used for laboratory containers. It is made of glass that does not leave any taste or smell. Each decanter is hand inspected, polished and tied in the USA.
WHY IT IS GOOD TO USE CHEMEX® FILTERS
CHEMEX Bonded™ filters are based on laboratory paper and are designed to remove the bad fats, bitterness, acid and deposits left behind by all other types of filters. Each filter is machine cut under the careful supervision of one of the production workers. The filter paper is made in the USA only and only from materials that come only from North America. When manufacturing, the company adheres to the principles of responsibility and sustainability.
