The BRITA filter systematically decarbonizes water in four steps:

1 Pre-filtering
The pre-filter retains coarse solid particles.

2 Reduction of carbonate hardness
The Ca and Mg ion exchanger converts the ions into H and thus prevents the formation of limescale.

3 Filtering with activated carbon
All water – including the water in the bypass – flows through an activated carbon filter, which reduces the content of substances that deteriorate the taste and aroma.

4 Fine filtering
During the final filtering, the remaining small hard particles are retained.
