Legend has it that while preparing a Christmas dinner, a Milanese chef named Ambrogione told his kitchen boy, Toni, to watch the oven. Toni fell asleep and the cake burned. In a panic, he used the remaining ingredients in the kitchen to knead a new dough. The guests were absolutely delighted with the dessert – and so il pane di Toni (Toni's bread), or today's panettone, was born.
